The Transcutaneous Jaundice Meter, also known as a Transcutaneous Bilirubinometer (TcB Meter), is a non-invasive neonatal screening device designed to estimate bilirubin levels through the skin of newborn babies.
The device provides healthcare professionals with a quick, painless and non-invasive method of assessing neonatal jaundice without requiring a blood sample for every screening measurement. The measuring probe is gently placed against the infant's skin—commonly on the forehead or sternum according to the device manufacturer's instructions—to obtain a transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) reading.
Its portable handheld design makes it particularly useful for maternity wards, neonatal units, NICUs, paediatric departments and newborn screening programmes. Depending on the model, features may include a digital display, measurement memory, rechargeable battery, charging station and rapid measurement.
Transcutaneous bilirubin measurement is primarily a screening and monitoring tool. Clinical decisions and confirmatory serum bilirubin testing should follow the device manufacturer's instructions and applicable neonatal jaundice guidelines.
