MAST Triple Sugar Iron Agar (TSI) is a dehydrated differential culture medium used for the differentiation of Enterobacterales/Enterobacteriaceae based on carbohydrate fermentation and hydrogen sulphide production.
The medium contains glucose (dextrose), lactose and sucrose, allowing laboratories to assess an organism’s ability to ferment these sugars. It also contains sodium thiosulphate and ferric ammonium citrate for detecting hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) production, while phenol red acts as the pH indicator.
Key Features
- Differentiates enteric Gram-negative bacteria
- Detects glucose, lactose and sucrose fermentation
- Detects hydrogen sulphide production
- Helps distinguish different members of Enterobacterales
- Phenol red provides a visible pH reaction
- Suitable for routine microbiology laboratories
- Supplied as dehydrated culture-medium powder
- Approximate final pH: 7.4
- Preparation concentration: 65.6g/L
- MAST product code: DM224D
