MAST C.L.E.D. Medium is a non-inhibitory differential culture medium used for the microbiological investigation of urinary tract infections. C.L.E.D. stands for Cystine Lactose Electrolyte Deficient medium. Its low electrolyte concentration helps prevent the swarming of Proteus species, while lactose fermentation enables differentiation of urinary pathogens. Mast Lactose-fermenting organisms generally produce yellow colonies, while non-lactose-fermenting organisms typically produce blue or green colonies. The medium is suitable for routine urine culture and bacteriuria investigations.
