The Manual Clinical Thermometer is a traditional liquid-in-glass thermometer designed for measuring human body temperature without batteries, electricity or electronic components. Modern versions are commonly mercury-free, using a gallium-based metallic liquid such as Galinstan instead of mercury. The thermometer uses the thermal expansion of the liquid inside its glass capillary tube to indicate temperature against a graduated scale. Typical mercury-free clinical models have a measuring range around 35°C to 42°C with 0.1°C graduations.
