The Leica HistoCore PEGASUS Plus is a high-performance automated dual-retort tissue processor designed for histology and anatomical pathology laboratories requiring high-throughput and flexible tissue processing. Its dual-retort architecture allows laboratories to run different processing protocols in parallel on the same instrument. Each retort accommodates up to 200 cassettes, providing a maximum simultaneous processing capacity of 400 tissue cassettes. Leica states this provides 33% more capacity per run compared with a typical 300-cassette single-retort processor. The system is designed to accommodate different specimen types—including biopsies, larger specimens and fatty tissues—using processing protocols appropriate to laboratory requirements. The PEGASUS Plus also integrates iScan tracking technology. It can capture cassette ID, quantity and color while tracking basket ID, user ID and reagent information, providing laboratories with enhanced specimen traceability and processing documentation. Another important feature is the integrated density meter, which monitors reagent concentration and alerts users when an incorrect concentration is detected, helping protect tissue-processing integrity.
