The Embedding Cassette, also known as a Histology Tissue Cassette or Tissue Processing Cassette, is a laboratory consumable designed to securely hold and identify tissue specimens during histological processing, fixation, dehydration, clearing, infiltration and paraffin embedding.
The cassette typically features multiple ventilation slots that allow processing reagents to circulate efficiently around the tissue specimen while helping keep the sample safely contained throughout the histology workflow.
Manufactured from durable, chemical-resistant plastic, commonly acetal/polyoxymethylene (POM) or similar laboratory-grade polymer depending on the manufacturer, embedding cassettes are designed to withstand exposure to routinely used histology processing reagents.
A dedicated writing or labeling surface allows laboratories to record specimen identification information manually or, where compatible, using cassette-printing systems. Depending on the design, cassettes may feature an integrated hinged lid or separate lid.
Embedding cassettes are widely used in histopathology laboratories, pathology departments, medical laboratories, research institutions and teaching laboratories.
