The Disposable Viral Transport Medium (VTM) Sampling Tube is a sterile specimen collection and transport system designed for collecting, preserving and transporting clinical samples for viral laboratory testing. A typical VTM kit consists of a sterile screw-cap transport tube containing viral transport medium and one or more sterile sampling swabs. The medium helps preserve viral specimens during transportation from the collection point to the laboratory and may contain proteins for specimen stabilization together with antimicrobial agents to suppress bacterial and fungal contamination. VTM tubes are used for nasal, nasopharyngeal and throat specimens intended for molecular or other compatible viral diagnostic testing. CDC guidance also recognizes viral transport medium for transporting appropriate respiratory specimens.
