The Dialyzer (Hemodialyzer) is a specialized blood purification filter used during hemodialysis treatment. Often described as an “artificial kidney,” it helps remove accumulated waste substances and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys cannot adequately perform these functions.
During hemodialysis, the patient's blood passes through thousands of hollow fibers inside the dialyzer. Dialysate circulates outside the fibers, generally in the opposite direction. The semipermeable membrane permits the controlled movement of water and selected solutes between the blood and dialysate compartments.
Dialyzers are available with different membrane materials, surface areas and permeability/flux characteristics. Selection should therefore be based on the patient's dialysis prescription and the specifications of the dialysis system rather than assuming all dialyzers are interchangeable. The National Kidney Foundation notes that dialyzer selection can depend on treatment prescription, blood tests, vascular access, body size and treatment goals.
Key Features
Hollow-fiber hemodialysis filter
Provides the blood purification interface during hemodialysis
Semi-permeable membrane technology
Supports removal of metabolic waste and excess fluid
Blood and dialysate remain in separate flow compartments
Available as low-flux and high-flux configurations
Multiple membrane surface areas are available
High-flux dialyzers permit greater passage of water and some larger waste molecules than low-flux filters
Designed for integration with compatible hemodialysis equipment
Suitable for hospitals, dialysis centres and renal-care facilities
