Abbott Determine™ HIV Early Detect 1/2 – 4th Generation Rapid Test

Determine™ HIV Early Detect is a 4th-generation rapid diagnostic test from Abbott Point of Care designed for point-of-care HIV screening. Unlike antibody-only rapid tests, it combines detection of HIV-1 p24 antigen with HIV-1/2 antibodies, enabling detection of both acute and established HIV infection. Abbott identifies it as the first and only WHO-prequalified 4th-generation rapid diagnostic test. The test uses lateral-flow technology and provides results in approximately 20 minutes. It can be performed using fingerstick whole blood, venipuncture whole blood, serum or plasma, providing flexibility for hospitals, laboratories, clinics, blood-screening services and other appropriate professional testing environments. Why 4th Generation Matters Earlier-generation rapid HIV tests primarily detect antibodies produced by the immune system after infection. Determine HIV Early Detect additionally detects HIV-1 p24 antigen, which can become detectable during acute infection before HIV antibodies are fully established. This antigen-and-antibody approach can therefore identify HIV infection earlier than antibody-only tests.
